RootED Path Consulting was born from a simple but powerful observation: childhood was quietly changing.
Across schools and communities, expectations for young children continued to rise, yet child development itself had not accelerated. Children were being asked to do more, sooner — often before they were developmentally ready. In the pursuit of academic achievement, many schools felt increasing pressure to accelerate learning, and little by little, play, curiosity, and wonder began to take a back seat.
At RootED Path, we believe those goals do not have to compete.
Children can experience a joyful childhood while developing the knowledge, skills, and confidence they need to thrive. In fact, we believe those experiences are inseparable. Play, relationships, exploration, and meaningful experiences are not distractions from learning — they are the very foundation of it.
RootED Path was created to help schools, educators, and families reclaim those foundations. Our work is rooted in the belief that honoring childhood is not about lowering expectations — it is about building the strong roots children need to flourish for a lifetime.

RootED Path was founded by Mara Berger, an early childhood educator, educational leader, and mother of three, with over 20 years of experience in early childhood education. Most recently serving as an Early Childhood Director, she has supervised and led 47 educators over the course of her career, partnering with children, families, and school communities along the way.
Throughout her career, Mara has served in both classroom and leadership roles, helping build new schools from the ground up while also leading the transformation of established programs through thoughtful leadership, curriculum development, operational excellence, and intentional learning environments. Her work has always centered on one enduring belief: when we honor childhood, we create the conditions for lifelong learning.
Mara holds a Bachelor of Science in Early Childhood Education from the University of Vermont and a Master's Degree in School Building Leadership from New York University. These experiences, combined with over 20 years of work alongside children and educators, have shaped the philosophy that guides every RootED Path partnership.

For Mara, this means allowing children the time and space to truly be children — to embrace messy learning, follow their curiosities, explore meaningful questions, value their own ideas, and become active participants in their learning.
She believes that every child deserves to be seen as capable, every educator deserves thoughtful support, and every school has the opportunity to become a place where childhood is honored and practice is transformed.
Two decades of this work, and two chapters that shaped everything RootED Path does today.
Helping build a school from the ground up.
Mara's first role out of college placed her inside something rare — a school that did not exist yet. As a founding educator at Blue School, she helped build the program from the ground up, taking the founder's vision and bringing it to life in a creative, co-constructivist way, with children's interests driving the curriculum.
It was formative work, and wide in scope: she was responsible for operations, for curriculum, and for the daily relationships with parents and students that hold a young school together. Much of what she now helps new schools do, she learned by doing it first.

Mara went on to serve as Early Childhood Director of a 300-student Early Childhood Division at a large day school in Pinecrest, Florida. There she hired and built teaching teams, shaped the culture and climate of the division, and supervised and led 47 educators, guiding the professional development that helped them grow in their practice.
She guided the school toward Project-Based Learning while protecting a genuinely play-based environment — proof that rigor and childhood belong together. She also carried parent relationships and family satisfaction, and oversaw compliance and accreditation with NAEYC.
